Description

This castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. It looks amazing from the outside as the pictures show. Fantastic location with breath-taking scenery. Amazing large castle and grounds. A really great day out for all the family. Really enjoyable and unlike many historic places you feel close to the experience. The Castle occupies a strong defensive position on top of a volcanic rock. The site served as the capital of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Bernicia but was destroyed by the Vikings in AD 993. The Normans later built a castle on the site which evolved into a formidable border fortress. A walk on the beach makes this visit extra lovely.
